Rosa Parks Elementary is the eighteenth project in Bonneville Environmental Foundation’s Solar 4R Schools program, and the fifth Portland area school to receive solar electric panels from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF), the Energy Trust of Oregon, and Portland General Electric.

The Solar 4R Schools program, developed and managed by BEF, educates students and teachers on the functions and benefits of solar electric power, an increasingly popular renewable resource. In addition to producing clean, renewable energy, each school’s solar power system includes a curriculum package that uses the web-based, real-time data generated by each installation to provide students with a comprehensive, interactive learning experience. Rosa Parks' teacher Christy Zabo will lead the school’s renewable energy education efforts, and will use the photovoltaic system to enhance her classes.

An interactive, flash-animated kiosk located in the school's entry hallway details the live and historical performance of the 1.1 kilowatt system, visually depicts how solar electricity is generated, and describes the numerous other sustainable technologies incorporated into Rosa Parks Elementary. The school, a model of efficient design, has received recognition as a LEED-Certified Green Building.
