Low-Income Benefiting Community Solar
BEF’s Sunward program is dedicated to providing the economic and environmental benefits of solar and renewable energy to low-income communities, tribal communities, and communities of color throughout the Pacific Northwest. We build partnerships that develop renewable energy projects and deliver wealth-building and cost savings to communities.
What is Community Solar?
Community solar is a large solar system that members of the community can join to share the benefits of the solar energy that is generated.
This is great for people who don’t want to install their own rooftop solar or who rent or live in apartments or condominiums.
The energy generated by the solar systems goe to the utility energy grid, and the value of that energy is shared by all subscribers in the form of credits on their utility bills.
There is a monthly fee, but for income-qualified participants, it will always be smaller than the credit.
How does it work?
You subscribe to a portion of a solar project and then receive a credit on your monthly utility bill. There is a monthly fee, but for income-qualified participants, it will always be smaller than the credit— resulting in savings every month! Qualified low-income participants will have guaranteed annual savings on their utility bills.
Benefits
Access to clean, renewable energy without installing solar panels on your roof
Savings on your utility bill through credits for energy produced
Support for environmental sustainability and community development

Supporting Vulnerable Communities
We lead partnerships at the intersection of environment and trauma, cultivating ties to place, creating opportunity and strengthening communities.
